Throwback to
BIG BANGKOK FLOODS

1942

The flood started from the end of September to November. Due to the heavy rain, the Chao Phraya River water rose to 2.27 meters above mean sea level.

1983

Tropical Storm Kim, on October 15, while located over the South China Sea, the disturbance was classified as a tropical depression. Tropical Storm Kim contributed to the worst monsoon rains in Thailand in 30 years. In the capital of Bangkok, almost every street and alley sustained flooding, stranding motorists.

1995

In 1995, Bangkok witnessed the worst flooding in the city's history, with water levels reaching 2.27 meters. The flood lasted from October to November, with an estimated 2.6 million people affected in the town. Over two months of flooding in 1995, 26 major roads were severely damaged, and more than 112,000 Square meters of farmland was estimated to have been affected.

2011

Severe flooding occurred. In October, floodwaters reached the Chao Phraya's mouth and inundated parts of Bangkok's capital city. Flooding persisted in some areas until mid-January 2012 and resulted in a total of 815 deaths and 13.6 million people affected. The disaster has been described as "the worst flooding yet in terms of water and people affected." The World Bank has estimated 46.5 billion US Dollars in economic damages and losses due to flooding, and it ranks as the world's fourth costliest disaster.

Risk Anticipation in 2050

Land subsidence, sea-level rise, deforestation, urbanization, and wetlands removal have made floods more likely. Coastal cities are at most risks. 12 million people in Thailand might be affected.
